What is the degree program about?
The degree program in Physical Activity and Health gives students knowledge and experience in promoting health through physical activity and exercise for the prevention and rehabilitation of illnesses.
In small classes, the two-year program emphasizes how to conceptualize, implement, and evaluate intervention strategies for the promotion of physical activity. Through active participation, students gain knowledge and experience in the following areas:
- Conceptualizing intervention strategies for the promotion of physical activity and public health policies
- Implementing physical activity and health promotion measures within specific settings e.g., companies and schools, and for specific target groups like immigrants and older people
- Developing and implementing measures for individual physical activity and health promotion programs for specific people who are prone to certain diseases and health risks e.g., back pain, osteoporosis
- Quality assurance and management of specific physical activity and health promotion measures
- Scientific evaluation of specific physical activity and health promotion programs

In the first phase, students are introduced to disciplines in sport science, rehabilitation science, public health, researched methods, statistics and intercultural communication. During this phase, students acquire the skills required in order to acquire in-depth knowledge of complex and multidisciplinary areas of physical activity and health.
In the second phase, students acquire advanced and in-depth knowledge in the subject areas and receive an introduction to the key concepts of exercise and health in relation to social sciences. In this phase, students begin project-based learning activities and complete an internship.
In the third phase, students complete an internship in the area of physical activity and health and put their acquired knowledge into practice. Teaching is centered predominantly on project-oriented learning, during which students tackle real problems. - The Master’s degree program offers students an intercultural and interdisciplinary learning environment. International students account for approximately 75 percent of total student numbers.
- You are taught by sport scientists, rehabilitation scientists, political scientists and sociologists.
- The Institute of Sport Science and Sport is an internationally renowned academic center for physical activity and health and is involved in numerous national and international research projects.
- Lecturers in the Master’s degree program are often advisors for the World Health Organization, the European Commission and the German Ministry of Health.

The degree program gives students a broad overview of the area of physical activity and (public) health. Students who complete the degree program acquire sound research skills and training in working in multicultural and transdisciplinary teams on real problems concerning public health/health promotion linked to physical inactivity.
These skills put students in a position where they can market themselves effectively and begin their career in various different areas. After the first year of the program, students are recommended to use the internship and their Master’s thesis to consider possible areas of work and evaluate the various opportunities on the job market. -

Physical Activity and Health is an international Master’s degree program open to students with a undergraduate degree (the minimum requirement is a Bachelor’s degree).
Degrees in any of following programs are accepted:
- Degree programs focusing on health or exercise (Diplom, Master’s or Bachelor’s degrees) such as Sport Science, Medicine, Health Sciences or Physiotherapy at a German or international university
- Other health or exercise-oriented degree programs (Diplom, Master’s or Bachelor’s degrees) such as Psychology, Education Science or Sociology at a German or international university or other comparable qualification
- The degree program must have been completed with a grade of at least “good” or the equivalent.

Proficiency in German is not required for enrollment, but a basic knowledge of German (A1) must have been acquired during the first year at FAU. We strongly recommend that you have a basic knowledge of German, especially for the project-oriented teaching in the second year. The University’s Language Centre offers German courses for all levels free of charge.
