Philosophy/Ethics (Teaching degree)
The subjects philosophy/ethics (teaching profession at Gymnasiums) and ethics (teaching profession at elementary, middle or secondary schools) can be studied as extension subjects at FAU. A degree program is offered that includes a few compulsory modules and a large elective area. The content of the degree program is closely geared to the state examination and to working in a school.

What is the degree program about?
The teaching degree program in Philosophy/Ethics (Gymnasium) or Ethics (Elementary School, Middle School and Secondary School) is not an independent degree program, but an extension subject in the teaching degree program. This means that you can only study the course in the teaching degree program and there exclusively as a so-called „third subject“ in addition to the first and second subject.
In the extension subject Philosophy/Ethics or Ethics you will first learn the basics of practical and theoretical philosophy. You will also acquire knowledge in the area of applied ethics and deepen your knowledge in text seminars, reading courses and in the area of subject didactics. It is also important to note that the content of the extension subject differs depending on the type of school. This is already shown by the different name of the course in the teaching degree program for Gymnasium (where it is called „Philosophy/Ethics“) and for elementary, middle and secondary schools (where it is called „Ethics“). However, the differences between the study contents are relatively small.

The subject Philosophy/Ethics (teaching profession Gymnasium) can only be studied as an extension subject at FAU. In the case of extension subjects, the Bavarian Teacher Examination Regulations stipulate that complete study of the subject is not required for admission to the First State Examination. In the extension subject Philosophy/Ethics, a university performance record from the areas „Theoretical Philosophy“, „Fundamentals of Systematic Ethics“ and „Classical Works of Ethics“ as well as the record in the sub-area „Philosophy of Religion and Basic Knowledge of World Religions“ must be submitted instead (LPO 1 § 76, Para. 4 in the versions as of 29.1.2020).
Five modules are provided at FAU for this evidence. However, the competencies and knowledge taught in these modules are not sufficient to meet the requirements of the state examinations and teaching at school. For this reason, we offer a teaching degree program that includes not only the compulsory and elective modules, but also a large elective area. The content of the study program is closely aligned to the state examination and to the work at the school.
We recommend that you begin your studies in the winter semester and take the „Introduction to Philosophy“, the „Basic Course in Practical Philosophy“ and the „Introduction to Applied Ethics“ right at the beginning of your studies. -

The application deadline for international applicants is July 15th for the winter semester and January 15th for the summer semester.
