What is the degree program about?
Philosophy is based on the freedom of thought. Therefore, students of the FAU Master’s degree program Philosophy enjoy a vast freedom of choice.
You want to focus on language philosophy, political philosophy or the philosophy of the Early Modern Period in your Master’s degree program? No problem. The content of the degree program is tailored to the knowledge and interests of the individual Master’s student.
- You choose one specialization subject in theoretical or practical philosophy.
- The specialization subject is also reflected the topic of your Master’s thesis. All other modules in the theoretical and practical philosophy can be selected irrespective of the specialization subject.
- You can choose the content of the degree program according to your interest. You receive individual support all along the way: You are assigned a personal mentor who helps you set up your individual study plan and develop a strategy for your studies.

The degree program consists of the following nine modules:
- 3 Master’s modules (10 ECTS credits) which each consists of two Master’s seminars and a short written assignment (approximatley 12 pages)
- 2 Master’s specialization modules (15 ECTS credits) which consist of two Master’s seminars and a written assignment on the specialization (approximately 20 pages)
- 3 elecitve modules (10 ECTS credits) which can be chosen from the entire range of courses offered at the University
- 1 Master’s thesis module (30 ECTS credits) during which students write their Master’s thesis (approximately 80 pages)

The basic requirement for admission to the Master’s degree program in Philosophy is a subject-specific or subject-related Bachelor’s degree. A subject-specific degree is a degree in a one-subject, two-subject or three-subject Bachelor’s degree program in Philosophy, provided at least 70 ECTS credits were achieved in the subject philosophy. Degrees in other subjects are accepted as subject-related degrees if they covered a significant amount of philosophical content (at least 70 ECTS credits).
In addition:
- Applicants whose final grade is between 1.0 and 2.50 are admitted directly to the Master’s degree program in Philosophy. Applicants whose final grade is between 2.51 and 3.50 are invited initially to an interview with the admissions committee, who then decide on admission to the Master’s degree program. Applicants who have a final grade of 3.51 or worse will not be admitted to the Master’s degree program.
- Students who are enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program and have not yet graduated may be admitted to the Master’s degree program if they have achieved at least 140 ECTS credits. Evidence of graduation in a Bachelor’s degree program must be submitted at the latest by one year after starting to study the Master’s program. Students must graduate from a Bachelor’s degree program before being formally admitted to the Master’s degree program. Admission to the Master’s degree program is granted conditionally.
- Students who have only achieved 50 of the required 70 ECTS credits can also apply for admission. The Admissions Committee can grant admission under the condition that proof of further achievements worth up to a maximum of 20 ECTS credits and to be determined by the Admissions Committee be submitted within one year of commencing the Master’s degree program.
