The teaching degree program in music as a major subject is composed of subject-specific science, artistic components and subject-specific didactic components. The content of the study program for the individual school types is geared to the specific needs of the prospective teachers; the focus of the teaching of practical music and music theory knowledge and competencies is taught according to the requirements of the individual school levels and the age of the children and adolescents. The new media play an important role in this.

Subject Sciences

For the teaching profession at Real-, Grund- and Mittelschulen, modules in the artistic-practical area, in the theoretical-scientific area and in the area of music pedagogy / music didactics must be taken. In addition to instrumental playing, singing or ensemble work, students also study, for example, historical musicology, the history of rock and pop music, ear training or harmony. Courses on, for example, music didactics, the design of music lessons or music didactic concepts of the past and present cover the subject didactic parts.

In the case of RS and MS, a seminar on the practice of classroom music-making is added in the 4th semester within the artistic-practical area. A seminar on singing and making music in the classroom is required in the 4th semester for GS. In addition, a seminar on the practice of music teaching in GS or MS/RS is required in the 6th semester (Music Pedagogy)

The free area for GS and RS also includes a module on basic music didactic competencies and a module on music practice. The semesters are freely selectable.

Subject didactics

The current topics of discussion within subject didactics are presented and discussed in various seminars and exercises. The results are transferred to current music teaching in practical courses and teaching experiments. A subject didactic practical course is supplemented by a didactic accompanying course. Questions of current research are incorporated into the design of the seminars and exercises. Students are given the opportunity to develop and work on their own questions; the results are incorporated into the planning of lessons. Special interest is given to the discussion and teaching of current topics, e.g. popular music, intercultural music education, inclusion, class music-making, new media, etc.

Music as a minor

Music as a minor subject can be studied as one of three didactic subjects in GS and MS. There, basic principles (music theory, music pedagogy) and musical practice (choir, singing, instrumental playing) are taught.

Within the teaching degree program, the following offers are available to you:

• Participation in musical ensembles: chamber choir, large choir, performances with the orchestra of the Nuremberg State Opera, the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra, jazz ensemble, modern jazz ensemble, rock ensemble, big band, orchestra, chamber music groups.
• Musical theater production: every 2 years a large musical production is developed.

Emphasis within the teaching degree program:

• Seminars and exercises from the three elective areas of choral conducting, musical theater directing, audio and video technology.
• Use within the projects „klasse.im.puls“ and „Musikalische Grundschule“ as support for classroom teaching.

Under certain conditions, students in all teaching degree programs can apply for the academic degree „Bachelor“ after usually 6 semesters according to the LAPO. The type of Bachelor’s degree depends on the type of school studied and, if applicable, the choice of subject.
