Mechatronics
Mechatronics (M.Sc.)
Mechatronics is an interdisciplinary field that deals with the combination of mechanics, electronics and computer science. The master’s degree program in mechatronics builds on the fundamentals of the bachelor’s degree program and provides in-depth knowledge and skills in the areas of technical mechanics, control engineering, electrical engineering and computer science. Complex mechatronic systems are analyzed, designed, developed and implemented.

What is the degree program about?
The mechatronics degree program at FAU is largely supported by the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering-Electronics-Information Technology, with the participation of the Department of Computer Science. With the „Bavarian Competence Network Mechatronics“ and the „Cluster Mechatronics & Automation“, a nationwide unique research location for mechatronic system solutions has been created in Erlangen/Nuremberg.
The Master’s degree program consists of the modules M1 to M8, distributed over four semesters, and includes a professional internship of 8 weeks and the six-month preparation period for the Master’s thesis.
The following specializations can be selected at FAU:
- Control engineering
- Sensor technology
- Electric drives and power electronics
- Electronic components, circuits and systems
- Radar, radio and photonic systems
- Embedded systems
- Engineering Mechanics
- Design
- Laser and forming technology
- Factory automation and plastics technology
- Metrology and Quality Management

The basic prerequisite for admission to a Master’s degree program is an appropriately qualifying good Bachelor’s degree (minimum grade 2.5). If the final grade is >2.5, applicants are invited to take an oral entrance examination. This takes about 15 minutes.
Applicants will be assessed according to the following criteria:
- Secure knowledge of the subject-specific basics
- Good knowledge in the area of a subject-specific specialization corresponding to a selectable field of study of the Master’s program
- Description of a relevant subject-related project
- Knowledge of the relevant literature
- Positive prognosis based on increasing performance in the course of studies to date
Consecutive degree program/subject-specific bachelor’s degree:
- Mechatronics
Subject-related bachelor’s degree/access to master’s degree possible with conditions:
- Electrical Engineering-Electronics-Information Technology
- International Production Engineering and Management
- Energy Technology
- Mechanical Engineering
