Midwives are highly qualified healthcare professionals who care for pregnant women, women in labor and delivery, and newborns. As a midwife scientist, you will gain a sound knowledge for the professional care of pregnant women, women in labor and delivery, and newborns. The bachelor’s degree program in „Midwifery Science“ is an interdisciplinary program that teaches the most important knowledge from the fields of medicine, natural sciences, psychology, ethics and social sciences. It is not only about learning practical skills, but also about the theory and background of the profession.

What is the degree program about?
Pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period are among the most intensive phases of a woman’s life. During this time, midwives (m/f/d) are at their and their families‘ side from the beginning of pregnancy to the end of breastfeeding. As specialists, they provide complete and comprehensive medical and psychosocial support. As reliable alliance partners (m/f/d) of the woman, they support that the woman experiences pregnancy and birth strengthened and they promote the unity of mother and child. Research shows that good midwifery care can lead to fewer preterm births, fewer medical interventions during childbirth, shorter hospital stays, and longer and more frequent breastfeeding. Midwives support the natural progression of pregnancy and birth. A physician (m/f/d) is called in when something is no longer going according to the rules. Up to this point, the midwife (m/f/d) is trained to provide women with full medical care.

The bachelor’s degree program comprises seven semesters (standard period of study), during which the examinations for the bachelor’s degree are taken during the course of study. The curriculum includes a total of 29 competence-based modules (total workload: 210 ECTS credits), with a 2,295-hour practical component, which is completed in the gynaecological clinic and at other selected practical sites.
Within the first two semesters, the Basic and Orientation Examination (GOP) should be taken during the course of study, which is the prerequisite for further study. The examinations of the modules of the GOP can be repeated only once. The GOP must be passed at the end of the 3rd semester.
For the GOP, the following modules in the amount of 30 ECTS must be proven:
- Introduction to midwifery and basic science (1st semester, 5 ECTS)
- Fundamentals of physiology and anatomy (1st semester, 5 ECTS)
- Midwifery and nursing: self-conception and basics (1st semester, 10 ECTS)
- Basic aspects of midwifery (2nd semester, 10 ECTS)
All courses are held in German. Students whose native language is not German must provide proof of sufficient German language skills (Goethe certificate C1 or equivalent). For enrollment, proof of health suitability as well as a police clearance certificate must be provided. Also a medical certificate of measles vaccination or measles immunity for the practice of midwifery must be presented.
A good knowledge of English is also required, as English is the international professional and scientific language and internationally published studies and reference books are also usually published in English in the field of midwifery and health sciences.

Due to the limited number of places available (30 places), the selection of students is based primarily on the criteria of school background, completeness and impression of the application documents, appropriate ideas of training and profession, previous social commitment, personal expression. A minimum of four weeks of internship in a clinical and/or freelance obstetric institution must be presented (proof of internship or confirmation/confirmation of the internship period – if the internship only takes place between April 2023 to October 2023 — must be attached to the application).
The basic admission requirements for midwifery studies are regulated in §10 Midwifery Act.
Applicants (m/f/d) who are successful in the selection procedure conclude a study contract for academic midwifery training (practice) with the University Hospital Erlangen. The contract simultaneously entitles the student to enroll in the degree program B. Sc. Midwifery at the FAU.
Admission requirement for the study of midwifery science is either the general university entrance qualification (Abitur) or the subject-related university entrance qualification of a FOS/BOS in the field of social work or health (13th grade). If the school leaving certificate is not yet available for the application, the performance record from the last school semester (12/1 Gymnasium or 13/1 for BOS and FOS graduates (m/f/d)) should be submitted.
In addition to the general qualification for university entrance (Abitur), there are other access options for studying at FAU.
