What is the degree program about?
The Master’s degree program Chinese Studies with an Optional Focus is unique within Germany. By combining Chinese studies with another specialization, graduates not only gain a fundamental knowledge of Chinese studies, but also detailed insights into English and American studies, history, Chinese philology, political science or economics. The degree program covers intensive Chinese language courses, including the translation of academic texts from Chinese. The Master’s degree program Chinese Studies with an Optional Focus is international – the teaching language is English – research-oriented, and encourages interdisciplinary working.

The standard duration of study in the Master’s degree program is four semesters. At least half of the total of 120 ECTS credits is covered by courses in Chinese, a further 30 ECTS credits are accounted for with the Master’s thesis. The rest of the courses depend on the chosen specialization. You can combine your studies in Chinese Studies with courses from one of the following subjects: English and American Studies, history, political science or economics. It is also possible to focus entirely on Chinese studies.

There are a lot of reasons for choosing to study Chinese in Erlangen!
Excellent language courses: The courses are held in small groups led by qualified native speakers. Their teaching skills guarantee that students master Chinese characters, pronunciation and grammar.
Modern facilities: The Chair of Chinese Studies is housed in its own building together with Japanese Studies, and even has a garden. The classrooms are fitted out with the latest technology, including whiteboards. The Chinese Studies library is located in the same building and offers study places for students. The Chinese Studies library is the largest subject library at FAU and one of the largest Chinese studies libraries in Germany.
Good supervision: The lecturers provide dedicated supervision, they are always open to students’ concerns and requests. If you ever have any problems, you can contact our very active student association (FSI) at any time.
Wide range of courses on offer: A wide range of subjects in research and teaching, offered in collaboration with other disciplines at FAU as well as with national and international cooperation partners, give students a balanced and reflected view of Chinese language and culture, which is crucial in today’s current climate.
Optional extras: The institute offers a range of optional events in addition to obligatory teaching. There are summer parties, barbecues, a Chinese theater group and regular excursions to Europe and China.
Stay abroad: During their studies, students can spend time in China or Taiwan. Our lecturers can help you to plan your stay abroad and apply for scholarships.

- A degree including at least 70 ECTS in Chinese Studies or a related degree including at least 60 ECTS for Chinese Studies (at least 20 ECTS of which for academic subjects)
- A degree in Chinese Studies or a degree program focusing on China with a minimum final grade of 3.0. In some cases, students may have to pass a qualification assessment examination.
- English language proficiency of at least level C1 according to the CEFR
- Good knowledge of Standard Chinese
- Proof of proficiency in German at level B2 (CEFR); for exceptions, please refer to the degree program and examination regulations, Section 2 (2)(2).
