What is the degree program about?
The program prepares graduates for the increased qualification requirements in healthcare professions. It not only imparts scientifically sound specialist knowledge of practical relevance at the current state of research, but also provides students with fundamental and in-depth training in scientific methods, qualifying them to conduct their own scientific work and research. The degree program equips students with the skills they need to identify requirements for research and development in their own profession and professional practice and to implement suitable measures. After completing the program, graduates bring evidence-based knowledge into everyday practice and are also able to assess the evidence of professional knowledge themselves.

The Master’s degree program for working professionals runs over 5 semesters (regular duration of study) during which examinations are taken alongside the course. The curriculum includes skills-based modules worth 90 ECTS credits. The degree program is split into
- Transferable interprofessional skills in the student’s profession and with a focus on research
- Subject-specific theoretical achievements and
- Subject-specific practical achievements
2/3 of the ECS credits are acquired in the relevant specialization and 1/3 in an interprofessional component that is identical for all healthcare professions. The degree program imparts knowledge and skills in the areas of education management, staff management, management of healthcare facilities for in-patients and out-patients, quality management, HR management and HR development.
Depending on the specialization chosen, the degree program builds on the skills acquired in the subject-specific Bachelor’s degree program and the healthcare professionals’ individual skills in their specific profession and takes a practical approach to prepare students for differentiated professional work in healthcare facilities. The practical and skills-oriented interprofessional degree program combined with the students’ own individual work-related experiences allows them to identify and name problems in everyday clinical practice, as well as developing and implementing new care concepts in practice. -
Specialization Midwifery Science
The specialization in Midwifery Science allows midwives to expand and continue to develop their professional and methodological skills to prepare themselves for new challenges in healthcare structures. The degree program imparts the following skills:
- Professional-methodological skills: Students learn to critically assess developments in the field of obstetrics on the basis of evidence-based knowledge and to integrate them into their daily practice. The aim is to for students to learn to take an evidence-based approach at work, taking personal profession-specific skills and limits into consideration. Students receive in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge relating to midwifery science.
- Scientific skills: Students learn to make scientifically sound decisions taking societal-ethical parameters into consideration. They are able to acquire new knowledge, to conduct research and application-oriented research and thereby to make an essential contribution to the academization of the midwifery profession.
- Personal, social and communication skills: The students learn to interact appropriately with patients and members of other professions, to reflect critically on situations and their own behavior, to act responsibly and to implement criticism positively.

Due to its affiliation with Uniklinikum Erlangen, the program offers training focused on research and methodology according to the latest standards in the field of health sciences. The degree program at FAU is the only interprofessional Master’s degree program for healthcare professionals based at a university in Bavaria.

The degree program prepares students specifically for a management role in interprofessional settings in the healthcare sector and in the direct care of patients and clients. In addition, the degree program opens up further academic career options in the healthcare professions by establishing a university qualification pathway. As a university, FAU offers graduates the opportunity to complete a doctoral degree, followed by a habilitation.

In order to qualify for the Master’s degree program in Advanced Healthcare – Interprofessional Healthcare specializing in Midwifery Science, applicants require the following:
A Bachelor’s degree in Midwifery Science from FAU or another equivalent degree from an institute of higher education in Germany or abroad with as a rule at least seven semesters as the standard duration of study and 210 ECTS credits, or six semesters standard duration of study and 180 ECTS credits plus passing a special suitability assessment examination in order to reach the entry level of 210 ECTS credits
Proof of passing the state examination qualifying graduates to use the professional title of “midwife” pursuant to the currently valid version of the degree program and examination regulations for midwives (HebStPrV)
Passing the qualification assessment process.
Students who are enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program worth 210/180 ECTS credits and who have completed at least 180/150 ECTS credits may also apply; the transcript of records provides proof. Proof of completing the Bachelor’s degree must be submitted to the degree program coordinators at the latest by May 15 of the year in which the student commences study.
