Information on energy consumption
Origin and consumption of energy at FAU
Approximately 38,000 students and 6,500 members of staff study, research and work in FAU buildings. They require energy, i.e. electricity and heating, in order to carry out their work.
Electricity
Origin
- FAU purchases 100% certified green electricity (renewable)
- A small share of electricity is produced by the university itself from
- A cogeneration unit
- Photovoltaic systems
Necessary for
- Lighting
- Ventilation and air conditioning systems
- All devices and appliances (from the office to the laboratory)
- Cooling systems etc.
Consumption
- Approx. 68 GWh per year
Heating
Origin:
- Mainly provided by district heating from Stadtwerke Erlangen
- Stadtwerke Erlangen uses natural gas to produce district heating
Necessary for
- Indoor temperature
- Heating
- Avoiding condensation forming in cooling and air conditioning systems
Consumption
- Approx. 78 GWh per year
By way of comparison: The annual energy consumption of FAU (approximately 46,000) converted to typical single-person households
consumption (2023) | FAU | converted into single-person households (50 square meters, built in 1995) |
Area | more than 100 properties, 775,000 square meters | 15,500 |
Electricity consumption | 70,000,000 kWh | 46,667 |
Heat consumption | 58,000,000 kWh | 11,600 |
Natural gas (mainly for cooling systems) | 21,000,000 kWh | 4,200 |
Reference: Consumption of a typical single-person household (50 square meters, built in 1995); electricity approx. 1,500 kWh/year; heating approx. 100 kWh/square meter
