Professor Bréard’s responsibilities include digitalizing teaching and making it more international, developing and consolidating the degree program portfolio, considering issues relating to accreditation, and looking after the Master’s degree programs for professional development. She is also responsible for implementing and developing strategic goals for teacher training.
Curriculum vitae
Prof. Dr. Andrea Bréard, born in 1966, studied mathematics and computer science at TU München (Diplom) and the history of science at Fudan University Shanghai (Master’s). She completed a doctoral degree in the history of Chinese mathematics at TU Berlin and Université Paris 7. Her doctoral thesis won the Prix des Jeunes Historiens der Académie Internationale d’Histoire des Sciences (1998) and the Prix de Thèse der Fondation Sino-Française pour l’Éducation et la Culture (1999). After her postdoctoral fellowship from the Taiwanese Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation, she worked as an actuary from 1999 to 2002 in Munich, Paris and Taiwan. After that, she received a 3 year scholarship from the German Research Foundation to complete a habilitation at the City University of New York. In 2005, she was appointed Professor of Mathematics at the Université Sciences et Technologies de Lille, and was also appointed to the École Polytechnique as a professor from 2009 while still in this position. Following on from her habilitation in Chinese statistics in 2008, she was invited to the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (Berlin), the Käte Hamburger International Center at FAU, the Cluster of Excellence Asia and Europe in a Global Context (Heidelberg) and held visiting professorships at Renmin University in Peking and the École des Haute Études en Sciences Sociales. In 2017, Andrea Bréard accepted an appointment to Université Paris-Saclay, and in 2021 she transferred to FAU as a Humboldt professor.
Prof. Bréard was Vice President of the Département Humanités et Sciences Sociales (2009-2011) at the École Polytechnique from 2009 to 2011, and from 2018 to 2021 she was a member of the French national University Council. She is currently the Vice President of the International Society for the History of East Asian Science Technology and Medicine (ISHEASTM). Together with the University of Würzburg, she has been responsible since 2023 for a project focusing on China and funded by the BMBF aimed at strengthening expertise in cooperating with China in German academic institutions (KoWinChi). Since 2015, she has been a corresponding member of the Académie Internationale d’Histoire des Sciences, and in 2021 she was appointed as a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.
Prof. Bréard has published four monographs in four different languages, as well as almost 100 publications in journals and anthologies in Chinese Studies and the history of science.
She has been Vice President at FAU since April 1, 2024. Her term of office ends on March 31, 2027.
