Medical Moulage Collection
FAU’s Medical Moulage Collection
Moulages are wax casts of diseased body parts, usually taken directly from patients. They have been used as teaching material for medical students and for training programmes for doctors, as well as for documentation purposes, since the 19th century. However, they have become less and less widely used since the advent of colour photography, video and digital photography.
Leonhard Hauck – the first chair of the Department of Dermatology at the University, which was founded in 1923 – established the collection which has remained well preserved to this day and still contains around 150 moulages. They show skin and venereal diseases that were common at the beginning of the 20th century and are a testament to a method of teaching that has largely been forgotten. The majority depict symptoms of tuberculosis and syphilis.
The Medical Moulage Collection is an impressive part of medical history and valuable source for research. In addition, some of the artefacts are regularly used for medical training, while it is ensured that they are preserved and handled with care.
