General information about applying for a Master’s degree program or PhD
Proof of a degree equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree
To apply for a Master’s degree program you must have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent. Further information on the minimum requirements.

Please note that not all Master’s degree programs at FAU can be started in the summer semester. The current overview contains a list of all the degree programs that can be started during the summer semester.

- Applications for Master’s degree programs for summer semester 2025 (except for Psychology and Psychology with a focus on Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy (KliPs)) can be submitted as of September 15, 2024 or October 15, 2024. The dates from which applications can be submitted are listed here. Please note that not all Master’s degree programs at FAU can be started in the summer semester.
- Applications for Master’s degree programs starting in winter semester 2024/25 (except for Psychology and Psychology with a focus on Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy (KliPs)) can be submitted as of February 15, 2024 or April 15, 2024. The dates from which applications can be submitted are listed here.
For applicants with qualifications from India, the APS certificate must be submitted when applying for admission to a degree program (Bachelor’s degree, State Examination and Master’s degree), for the German course, or the Studienkolleg for the Free State of Bavaria, provided that the application is based on a secondary education certificate and/or course achievements from India.
Please note the following exceptions:
An APS certificate is not required for application if one of the following conditions is met:
- The applicant is already resident in Germany and has proof of residence (Meldebescheinigung) that is not older than three months.
- The highest educational qualification originates from a country other than India, China or Vietnam. The first degree is relevant for the application for a Master’s degree program. If applicants gained their Bachelor’s degree in India and a Master’s degree in another country, an APS certificate is still required. In this case, the university degree relevant for the application is the Bachelor’s degree and the Master’s degree is secondary.
- The applicant has passed an assessment examination (Feststellungsprüfung) in Germany.
- The applicant is located in India and is studying a distance learning degree program at a German university.
- The applicant has been awarded a scholarship from Germany or the EU.

For winter semester 2024/25
- Applications for winter semester 2024/25 can be submitted from May 2, 2024. Please note that applications for entering in the winter semester may only be submitted for the first and third semester of study.
- An application with all required documents must be submitted to FAU by July 15, 2024. The final submission deadline for undergraduate degree certificates is September 10, 2024 if the applicant does not already have the certificate at the time of applying for the Master’s degree program. Please send a copy of your undergraduate degree certificate or graded transcript of records by post to the Master’s Office of FAU or a scanned copy via e-mail to zuv-masterbuero@fau.de.
For summer semester 2025
- The application period for summer semester 2025 will begin on October 15, 2024. Applications for entering in the summer semester may only be submitted for the second and fourth semester of study. An application with all required documents must be submitted to FAU by January 15, 2025.
- The final submission date for proof of previous achievements (transcript of records) for the second and fourth subject semesters is March 10, 2025 via email to zuv-masterbuero@fau.de
- In order to be admitted to a higher semester of the degree program MSc Psychology, applicants must have achievements that can be credited and used to determine their level. If admission is granted, the confirmation of accredited seminars must be presented during enrollment.

Winter semester 2024/25
- The application period for winter semester 2024/25 will begin on May 2, 2024. Please note that for this subject applications may only be submitted for entry into the first and third subject semester.
- Please note that it is only recommended that you apply if you have proof of completing all course achievements in a recognized Bachelor’s degree program in psychology that meets the requirements for working towards a license to practice psychology in accordance with the German Licensing Regulations for Psychotherapists (PsychThApprO), and are therefore qualified for acceptance onto a recognized Master’s degree program focusing on clinical psychology and psychotherapy (KliPs) that meets the requirements for working towards a license to practice psychology.
- An application with all required documents must be submitted to FAU by July 15, 2024. The final submission deadline for undergraduate degree certificates is September 10, 2024 if the applicant does not already have the certificate at the time of applying for the Master’s degree program. Please send a scanned copy of your undergraduate degree certificate or graded transcript of records, confirmation of employment qualifying for entry into a profession (BQT I), of at least 240 hours including an orientation placement (at least 150 hours) and confirmation from your university that your Bachelor’s degree program meets the requirements of the Licensing Regulations for Physicians (BÄK) (a template for this purpose is also available on the website of the degree program) via email to zuv-masterbuero@fau.de as well as to klips-master@fau.de for the document check by September 10, 2024 at the latest. We recommend that you submit your documents as soon as possible.
Summer semester 2025
- The application period for summer semester 2025 will begin on October 15, 2024. Applications for entering in the summer semester may only be submitted for the first, second and fourth semester of study. An application with all required documents must be submitted to FAU by January 15, 2025.
- For applications for entering the first semester of study, the final submission deadline for undergraduate degree certificates is March 10, 2025 if the applicant does not already have the certificate at the time of applying for the Master’s degree program. Please send a scanned copy of your undergraduate degree certificate or graded transcript of records, confirmation of employment qualifying for entry into a profession (BQT I), of at least 240 hours including an orientation placement (at least 150 hours) and confirmation from your university that your Bachelor’s degree program meets the requirements of the Licensing Regulations for Physicians (BÄK) (a template for this purpose is also available on the website of the degree program) via email to zuv-masterbuero@fau.de as well as to klips-master@fau.de for the document check by March 10, 2025 at the latest. We recommend that you submit your documents as soon as possible.
- For applications to enter the 2nd and 4th subject semester, the final submission date for proof of previous achievements (transcript of records and a current certificate of enrollment) is March 10, 2025 via email to klips-master@fau.de We do not necessarily require a certificate for BQT I (employment qualifying for entry into a profession, at least 240 hours) including an orientation placement (at least 150 hours). We will let you know if we do.
- In order to be admitted to a higher semester of the degree program MSc Psychology with a focus on Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy, applicants must have achievements that can be credited and used to determine their level. If admission is granted, the confirmation of accredited seminars must be presented during enrollment.

Applications for the PhD in Advanced ImmunoMedicine (full time and part time) can be submitted both in the summer and winter semesters. Further information on course content can be found on the degree program website.
The requirements for an application to the PhD degree program in Advanced ImmunoMedicine are as follows:
- A completed degree program in a relevant scientific Master’s degree program or medical degree program and
- Confirmation of a supervision agreement at the time of the application.
Applications should be submitted via the online portal campo. Suitable applicants will be invited to a personal selection interview as part of the qualification assessment process. The offer of a place will be made after the qualification assessment process has been completed.
The application period for summer semester 2024 for the PhD degree program in Advanced ImmunoMedicine ends on February 15, 2024.
The admissions letter will remain valid provided no significant changes have been made either to the Master’s degree program or to the requirements for admission to the Master’s degree program. If applicants do not enroll in the semester of admission, they may re-apply in a later semester. Applicants for a Master’s degree program who applied for and were offered a place on the same Master’s degree program in the previous semester must still apply online via the campo application portal. In addition to their application documents, they must also upload their admissions letter from the previous semester in the upload section.
The application process
First degree
You can only apply for a Master’s degree program at FAU if you have completed or will soon complete an undergraduate degree (e.g. Bachelor’s degree) at a public or state-approved university that qualifies you to progress to study for a Master’s degree.
It is possible to start a Master’s degree program before completing your undergraduate degree if you meet certain minimum requirements. You must present your undergraduate degree certificate within one year of starting your Master’s degree program. If you are unable to do so, you will not be able to continue with the Master’s degree program.
Individual minimum requirements
Individual degree programs that make use of this rule have different requirements. If you are unsure of which requirements apply, please contact the degree program coordinator.
The following list provides an overview of the different regulations at each of the faculties with regard to the minimum requirements for applications:
Students can apply for most degree programs at the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology leading to a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree after obtaining a total of 140 ECTS credits from completed modules. Other rules apply for the degree programs in Psychology (M.Sc.) and Psychology focusing on Psychology and Psychotherapy (M.Sc.). Please refer to the relevant degree program and examination regulations for further information.
Bachelor’s students who have not yet completed their degree program can apply for degree programs at the School of Business, Economics and Society once they have completed modules worth a minimum of 135 ECTS credits if the standard duration of studies for the Bachelor’s degree program is six semesters. If the standard duration of studies is more than six semesters, the minimum number of credits that must have been obtained in completed modules changes accordingly (162 ECTS credits for a standard duration of studies of seven semesters; 189 ECTS credits for a standard duration of studies of eight semesters).
Students may apply for the degree program in Medical Process Management (MPM) once they have completed modules worth a minimum of 140 ECTS credits.
Students may apply for the degree program in Molecular Medicine once they have completed modules worth a minimum of 150 ECTS credits.
In the case of the degree program in Advanced Healthcare, Bachelor’s students who have not yet completed their degree program can apply once they have completed modules worth a minimum of 180 ECTS credits if the undergraduate degree comprises 210 ECTS credits. Students can apply after completing modules worth 150 ECTS credits if the undergraduate degree comprises 180 ECTS credits.
The following formal requirements must be met in order to apply for the PhD in Advanced ImmunoMedicine:
- A Master’s degree in a science subject or a medical degree.
- A supervisor’s note of acceptance.
- Suitable applicants will be invited to a personal selection interview as part of the qualification assessment process. The offer of a place will be made after the qualification assessment process has been completed.
- Students may apply for the degree programs in Chemistry, Computational and Applied Mathematics, Data Science, Geosciences, Integrated Immunology, Mathematics, Molecular Science, and Economics and Mathematics once they have completed modules worth a minimum of 140 ECTS credits.
- Students may apply for the degree programs in Integrated Life Sciences (ILS) and Cell and Molecular Biology once they have completed modules worth a minimum of 135 ECTS credits.
- Students must have completed modules worth a minimum of 150 ECTS credits to apply for the degree programs in Physical Geography: Climate and Environmental Studies and Cultural Geography.
Students may apply for the degree programs at the Faculty of Engineering once they have completed modules worth a minimum of 140 ECTS credits.
Applications for Master’s degree programs and the PhD in Advanced ImmunoMedicine have to be submitted online via the campo application portal.
During the online application process, you are requested to upload your application documents to the upload section as a PDF file. Your application is then checked on the basis of the documents you have uploaded. There is no need to send application documents by post.
Master’s degree program in Psychology and the Master’s degree program in Psychology with a focus on Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy:

Please note that you can only edit your application if you have not yet submitted it to FAU online and the status is set to “received online”.
Please note that documents cannot be submitted or changed once the application deadline has passed.[/hinweis]
In the upload area in the menu, you can check the documents which you have uploaded by clicking on the files. If you discover that you have uploaded the wrong file, it is possible to replace the file:
Click on “Zurück zur Übersicht” (back to overview) and “Antrag bearbeiten” (edit application) and edit your application as required. To do so please go to the “Studienbewerbung” (degree program application) and “Upload-Bereich” (upload area) sections.
