What is required if everyone is to benefit from a better future? This is the central question behind the UN’s sustainable development goals. Bearing this in mind, the British educational magazine Times Higher Education has launched a new ranking measuring the contribution made by universities across the globe to these goals. We are pleased to report that FAU has done well in the areas of good health and well-being and energy.

Restoring and preventing further loss of native forests is therefore essential for combating climate change. It reduces human vulnerability to climate change by providing shade and cooling, reduces air pollution, stores carbon, builds natural systems resilience, prevents erosion and reduces flood risk by slowing water flow and supports biodiversity.

Prof. Dr. Paul Steinmann, Chair of Applied Mechanics, has been awarded an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (ERC). Human-caused climate change increases wildfire by intensifying its principal driving factor – heat. The heat of climate change dries out vegetation and accelerates burning. Analyses show that cross the western U.S., higher temperatures caused by human-caused climate change doubled burned area from 1984 to 2015, compared with what would have burned without climate change.

FAU Ambassador Professor John Bessant, who has been active in research, teaching and consultancy in innovation management for over 30 years, will help you to understand the skills, ideas and capabilities behind the concept of innovation.

FAU is one of seven universities in Bavaria set to receive funding of around 144,000 euros from the High-Tech Agenda Bavaria. The funding will be used to develop experimental and practical courses. In these courses, students will learn, for example how to understand encryption protocols or teach quantum technology in schools using virtual reality glasses.
