Where is FAU heading in the coming years? Not one, but two Bavarian ministers – science minister Markus Blume, and Minister of the Interior Joachim Hermann – answered questions posed by science and education journalist Jan-Martin Wiarda as well as students and staff in a discussion panel with FAU President Prof. Dr. Joachim Hornegger.

A star in the Columba constellation, approximately 900 light years away, has been hiding a dark past, as has now been revealed by an international team of researchers led by FAU. The star, that was once the heart of a binary star system, lost its envelope when it engulfed its companion.

FAU has once again performed well in THE subject rankings. This year, for the first time, all 11 of the subjects reviewed made it into the rankings. The best international ranking was obtained by Engineering, coming in at place 102, and 5th in Germany, as was Business and Economics.

The focus is on sustainability in this year’s Dies academicus at FAU: On Friday November 4, the University will open the doors of Heinrich Lades Halle in Erlangen to welcome its guests from 4 pm, not only to officially celebrate its founding day but also to provide valuable insights into various aspects of this extremely important topic. Virtual exhibition spaces, a personalized bra for treating breast cancer or an app that improves physiotherapy treatments were just some of the ideas from the eight teams who recently presented their start-ups at the Zollhof Tech Incubator in Nuremberg. The winning start-up, Evolonic, will travel to Pisa in December to represent FAU at the European EELISA Start-up Demo Day.

The Jakob Herz Prize was awarded for the seventh time on Friday October 7, 2022. The prize is awarded together with the Research Foundation at Universitätsklinikum Erlangen every two years for outstanding scientific achievements from theoretical and clinical medicine. This year’s award winner Prof. Dr. Douglas F. Easton from Cambridge received the prize in recognition of his breakthroughs in breast cancer research.
