FAU is huge, with lots of different buildings spread over several cities. It can be quite confusing. That is why we have picked out five places in Erlangen that are particularly important for new students.

Important places for new students

In the main University Library in Schuhstraße 1 in Erlangen you can pick up and return the books you have ordered. Reading rooms and self-study areas are available where you can do some literature research, study or write your assignments in peace and quiet.

The cafeteria on the first floor offers sustenance to keep you going, and you keep all your belongings safe in a locker if necessary. Right next to the counter where you can return your books you will find machines where you can validate your FAUcard and top it up with cash.

Feeling overwhelmed with your research? The Main Library regularly offers training courses.

Do you have to provide proof of your language proficiency or other qualifications, or do you have problems registering for examinations? If so, then the Examinations Office in Halbmondstraße 6 in Erlangen is where you have to go. Are you unsure who to talk to? You can find the name, office no. and email address of the person responsible for you on the Examinations Office website. Often, though, there is no need for you to come in person, an email suffices.

In the same building you can also find the Student Advice Center and the Career Service.

Erlangen Schlossgarten

Students enjoy gathering in the Erlangen Schlossgarten. Particularly in summer, it is a favorite spot for chatting, reading, studying and picnicking. From the Schlossgarten, you can reach the Kollegienhaus, the Schloss and the Orangerie. It is also where you will find the letterbox for submitting your final thesis.

Hungry? Time to visit the restaurants and cafés run by Student Services! The two most popular restaurants are those located centrally at FAU Campus Erlangen Center Mensa at Langemarckplatz 4 and the Südmensa at Erwin-Rommel-Straße 60 for FAU Campus Erlangen South. Students can come here between seminars to boost their energy with a good value but still tasty coffee or a choice of different meals. It goes without saying that there are always vegetarian and vegan options on offer as well.

It can’t be missed: As the name (which translates as red square) suggests, the Rote Platz at FAU Campus Erlangen South consists entirely of red tiles. Adjacent to the Roter Platz you will find a number of institutes of the Faculty of Sciences and Faculty of Engineering, branch libraries, lecture halls, a large student restaurant (the Südmensa) and FAU’s Computer Center.
