Free courses all about writing

On 7 March, 2024, the University Library invites you to attend the “Long Night of Writing”. From 4 pm to 11 pm, the Library offers workshops all about writing free of charge. There are also special writing consultations and workshops for international students on offer, some of which are held in English. A few of the courses are only held online. There is no need to register beforehand.

Workshops in English:

18:30 Uhr: Don’t sweat the small stuff – little details with big effects (online)

This workshop zooms in on those tiny details of English academic writing that can have a big effect if you use them right – and if you get them wrong. We’ll be looking at how (not) to use ‘of’, ‘that’ and ‘which’, commas, hyphens, parentheses, ampersands (&) and articles. Bring your questions along!

20:00 Uhr: Building a research argument in academic writing

This workshop will look at how we can use a range of specific strategies and language functions to build a persuasive argument. We will analyse examples and identify a toolkit of useful language to help you argue a case effectively and develop your own position in your academic writing.

Writing Consultations

Special writing consultations and workshops for international students are on offer, some of which are held in English.

The Long Night of Writing is organized by the University Library in collaboration with the the Writing Centre at the Language Centre (SZ), the FAU Competence Center for Applied Philosophy of Science and Key Qualifications (ZIWIS), the Erlangen Regional Computing Center (RRZE), the Student Committee of the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology (FSV Phil), the Student Representation (STUVE) and the Career Service.
