FAU cluster passes first hurdle in the Excellence Strategy

The Excellence Strategy of the federal and state governments is one of the most important and attractive research funding initiatives in Germany, and the competition is fierce. Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) has submitted high-caliber research proposals in the current call to acquire prestigious excellence clusters. One application was able to overcome the hurdles of the first round and convince the reviewers – a great success for FAU. The project outline “TransFORming HUMAN RIGHTS” was received positively by the reviewers. It will proceed to the second round with a full application on August 22, 2024.

Autocratization, planetary environmental crises, global migration and displacement, (de-)globalization of production networks, or digital transformation: These megatrends are shaping the 21st century and putting human rights under pressure. The interdisciplinary cluster project “TransFORming HUMAN RIGHTS” addresses this future megatrend and examines human rights issues that are important in times of transformation. Human rights are already firmly anchored in both the social sciences and law at FAU and form a key research priority that will be further expanded. The cluster project is based at the interdisciplinary Center for Human Rights Research at FAU in Nuremberg, the city of human rights. Close cooperation with the International Nuremberg Principles Academy, the German Institute for Human Rights and other partners in Germany and abroad is planned.

“Success in the federal and state Excellence Strategy is an important accolade in the research landscape in Germany. We are happy and proud to be able to proceed to the next round with a cluster project and once again emphasize how strong our FAU is in terms of human rights research,” emphasizes FAU President, Prof. Dr. Joachim Hornegger. “I would like to take this occasion to thank our researchers who have worked on the application with incredible passion and so richly deserve this success. We will not take a break and will start working on the full application right away, which we are invited to submit in August.”

In the context of the Excellence Strategy, 41 out of 143 draft proposals for new Excellence Clusters entered in the first round were invited to submit a full proposal. The universities that are now submitting full proposals will compete again with the expected continuation applications from the existing 57 Excellence Clusters for a maximum of 70 individual grants.
