THE World University Ranking
FAU top of the ranking for patents and third-party funding
In the recently published international THE World University Ranking 2023, FAU is once more among the top 10 percent of participating universities from across the globe. FAU ranked 193 in the international comparison of almost 2000 universities. We are particularly pleased with our achievements in the new indicator “Number of patent citations”, where we repeated our outstanding result from the THE Impact Ranking: Number 1 in the world in the area of Industry, compiled from patents and third-party funding from industry.
Internationally, FAU has improved three places in the overall ranking in comparison to the year before. Nationally, FAU has made it into the top 20, moving up from place 22 last year to place 19 this year. The University has also done extremely well in the area of research environment, coming in at place 155 internationally.
The THE ranking
The Times Higher Education World University Ranking (THE WUR) is one of the leading global university rankings published annually by Times Higher Education. More than 1900 universities are assessed and ranked on the basis of criteria such as teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income. The methodology has been altered this year, with indicators being weighted differently and a new indicator has been introduced, the “Number of patents based on research in the university”. The ranking is compiled in collaboration with Elsevier and counts as one of the most influential international university rankings beside the QS World University Ranking and the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).
The complete ranking is available on the Times Higher Education website.
