Go-ahead for new building for Technical Chemistry
Budget committee of Bavarian state parliament has approved construction plans
The budget committee of the Bavarian state parliament has approved construction plans for the new Technical Chemistry building at FAU, which means building work for the new high-tech building can begin. A total of 140 million euros is being invested in the new building.
Science minister Markus Blume said of the approval of the project: “The Free State of Bavaria is investing more than ever before in science and research. This also applies in particular to the infrastructure at FAU. Just recently we passed the 1.5 billion euro mark for investments in new construction projects at the university. Technical Chemistry is a crucial piece of the puzzle for the entirely new infrastructure of one of the absolute flagships at FAU. The move to FAU Campus Erlangen (South) means we are bringing chemistry at FAU together in one location, creating world-class research infrastructure. Our High-Tech Agenda Bavaria is a real accelerator for building projects. In Bavaria, we know that excellent research needs excellent conditions.”
Minister for Housing, Construction and Transportation, Christian Bernreiter, explains: “I am very pleased about the support from the Bavarian government for this project. The new building for Technical Chemistry means FAU will receive a fully equipped laboratory building that will offer students and teaching staff excellent conditions for studying, science and research. This project is an important contribution to the development of FAU in Erlangen and a further milestone for the development of Bavaria as a location for research.”
Minister of the Interior Joachim Herrmann says: “Investment in research at a world-class level is now happening at a rapid pace at FAU. I am very grateful that the Bavarian parliament is supporting this flair for innovation and the dynamism that is currently developing to such an extent and at such speed. The Bavarian government will continue on this path to success. The government is not only true to its word: Investing over 1.5 billion euros means that it has exceeded the goals set in 2019 and is ensuring the continuing development of Erlangen and FAU as an attractive international location for science and research. The appeal of the region as an excellent location for researchers from all over the world will increase even further.”
140 million from Hightech Agenda Bavaria
Technical Chemistry is a top research area at FAU, in which researchers investigate topics such as catalysis and the development of new catalyst systems and thermodynamics. The highly-regarded field of hydrogen research is also an important area of application at FAU.
The new building at FAU Campus Erlangen (South) will house state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities. The project, costing around 140 million euros, is part of the High-Tech Agenda Bavaria innovation campaign.
In conjunction with the “Chemikum” building, which is being extended to include a second building, the new building for Technical Chemistry and two additional lecture halls built in a modular design and that will be ready for use in winter semester 2023/24, form the new “Chemistry Campus” on the FAU Campus Erlangen (South). The state of Bavaria is investing more than half a billion euros here.
Site development at FAU
The next ten years will bring important construction measures that will have a lasting impact on the appearance of FAU and the cities of Erlangen and Nuremberg in the long term.
An overview of all the construction projects for the next few years is available on the “Site development at FAU” website.
