‘Hightech Agenda Bavaria is a big deal’

FAU President Prof. Dr. Joachim Hornegger welcomes Minister President Dr. Markus Söder’s declaration on behalf of the government

FAU President Prof. Dr. Joachim Hornegger has welcomed the latest declaration by Minister President Dr. Markus Söder on behalf of the Bavarian government: ‘In today’s declaration on behalf of the government, Minister President Dr. Markus Söder has made it clear that artificial intelligence is to be the topic of the future in Bavaria, and that thanks to its excellent pioneering research in this area, Erlangen is to play an outstanding role as the health hub in the Bavarian AI landscape. This is wonderful news, not least because FAU is set to benefit enormously from the investment. FAU is already at the top of its league in various areas of digitalisation in medicine as well as in cutting edge medical imaging and processing. The new professorships will help us immensely to get on track for the future and to continue to consolidate FAU’s leading position in these fields in the international market. Materials research is another major focus for FAU. We have made a name for ourselves internationally in the area of biomaterials research, and now have the opportunity to expand from our current position in Erlangen to an additional site at our Fürth Campus.

An important parameter for scientific success, in particular as far as international visibility is concerned, is the tight intermeshing of university and extramural research, which is and must continue to be strongly encouraged and pursued in the entire Metropolitan region. #The planned Max Planck Centre for Physics and Medicine is another essential building block in this respect. The expansion of the Translational Research Centre will allow us to drive forward the unique connections between FAU, Universitätsklinikum Erlangen and extramural research in Erlangen. The advantage of constellations such as these is that patients can benefit directly and without delay from our research. We in Bavaria like to joke that we don’t speak, we act – the planned investment offensive is once more proof of this fact.

Hightech Agenda Bavaria is a big deal which has the potential to continue to establish Bavaria as a science hotspot attracting talented young researchers from abroad. Bearing Söder’s vision of a Franconian University of Excellence based on collaboration in mind, we will continue to intensify discussions with our partners throughout Bavaria.
