Funding for three projects with practical applications
Around 950,000 euros for cooperation projects at FAU
In conjunction with partners from science and business, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) has received up to 939,000 euros in funding from the Bavarian Research Foundation for three pioneering cooperation projects. Science minister Bernd Sibler presented the confirmation of funding to representatives from the Institute of Polymer Technology, Institute of Microwaves and Photonics, and the Chair of Resource and Energy-Efficient Production, in the presence of University President, Prof. Dr. Joachim Hornegger.
He congratulated them by saying: ‘Your pioneering ideas lay the foundation for progress. Your work makes a significant contribution to advancing application-oriented and practical research, which benefits both science and business in equal measure.’ FAU made a convincing case as a strong partner for all three projects, in particular with its extensive expertise in science and technology.
Optimising manufacturing and welding processes, developing sensors
The ‘KryoSonic’ project is researching sustainable and economical manufacturing processes for workpieces made of high-strength materials. Technische Universität München (TUM) and Technische Hochschule (TH) Deggendorf are partners to the Chair of Resource and Energy-Efficient Production at FAU under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Nico Hanenkamp, in addition to several companies. The Bavarian Research Foundation is funding the project with up to 438,000 euros.
The ‘FAB-Weld’ project is investigating ways of optimising welding processes for plastics in order to manufacture components in small and very small batches or to meet individual requirements as efficiently as possible. The Institute of Polymer Technology at FAU, which is led by Prof. Dr. Dietmar Drummer, is taking part in the project with several companies and has been granted up to 285,400 euros in funding.
In the project ‘Connecting hollow waveguides printed using 3D printers and conforming antennas for automotive radar applications’, the Institute of Microwaves and Photonics at FAU led by Prof. Dr. Martin Vossiek is working with a partner company to investigate means of further improving the guidance and distribution of signals from automotive radar systems. The flexibility of additive printing processes is opening up new solutions for the future. The Bavarian Research Foundation is providing a total of up to 216,000 euros in funding for this purpose.
The Bavarian Research Foundation was founded in 1990. In addition to state funding for research, the Foundation provides support to cooperation projects involving research institutions (universities and non-university institutes) and companies that are important for developments in science and technology or for business in Bavaria. Since its formation, the Bavarian Research Foundation has provided funding worth around 577 million euros for 900 projects. Science minister Bernd Sibler is a member of the Foundation’s board.
