Funding for German languages courses
FAU Association for Promoting Internationalisation presents refugees with scholarships
In order to study at FAU, refugees are required to learn German. The Association for Promoting Internationalisation at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg is supporting 24 refugees taking part in German language courses with a donation of 7200 euros.
Dr. Elisabeth Preuß, chairperson of the Association, and Dr. Brigitte Perlick, head of FAU’s Central Office for International Affairs, recently presented the 24 recipients with partial scholarships of 300 euros each for German language courses preparing them to study. During the ceremony, Rotary International, represented by Prof. Dr. Werner Hohenberger, also presented awards to refugees who had demonstrated particular commitment to preparing for their studies.
Sina Fehr, a research associate at FAU Integra, the Forum for Integration and Intercultural Dialogue, emphasised how important these scholarships are. ‘These courses cost 650 euros and there are additional costs for the DSH examination, for example,’ she says. ‘These scholarships are a positive symbol for the refugees participating in our project.’ The DSH examination (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang) is important because international applicants must pass it in order to enrol at German universities.
The Association consists of members, alumni and friends of FAU and aims to promote internationalisation at the University. In recent months it has contributed greatly to supporting refugees, such as by funding language courses.
