Start of a new MRI development partnership with Universitätsklinikum Erlangen and FAU

The first 7 Tesla MRI system in Bavaria has been installed at Universitätsklinikum Erlangen. On 22 April, the centrepiece of the new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner – a 7 Tesla magnet developed by Siemens Healthcare – was lowered into the future diagnosis room next to the Department of Neurosurgery (Schwabachanlage 6) by crane. The installation marks the beginning of a new development partnership between Siemens, FAU and Universitätsklinikum Erlangen. The new 7 Tesla generation will be developed by Siemens in close collaboration with FAU researchers at Universitätsklinikum Erlangen. Back in 1982, the first Siemens MRI system was installed for clinical testing at Universitätsklinikum Erlangen in the same building.

FAU, Universitätsklinikum Erlangen and Siemens will all benefit from this project thanks to the close collaboration between developers, researchers and physicians in Erlangen. Dr. Bernd Montag, the CEO of Siemens Healthcare, and Prof. Dr. Joachim Hornegger, the FAU President, will briefly introduce the new development partnership between Siemens, FAU and Universitätsklinikum Erlangen at a press conference with the Bavarian Minister of the Interior, Joachim Herrmann, and the mayor of the city of Erlangen, Dr. Florian Janik. Dr. Montag will then press the red start button together with Prof. Hornegger and Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Jürgen Schüttler, the Dean of FAU’s Faculty of Medicine, and lower the new MRI magnet into its position, launching the collaboration project. Media representatives are invited to witness the installation of the new magnet. Filming and photography are allowed. Parking space for press representatives will be available on ‘Roter Platz’ in front of the Department of Neurosurgery (Schwabachanlage 6). Please send an e-mail to presse@uk-erlangen.de to register.
